Quad or Buggy? Which Dune Ride Is Right for You

Ride alone or side by side? Compare the feel, comfort and fun of quads and buggies before you book.

Both quads and buggies let you explore the Timlalin Dunes under engine power, and both are a lot of fun. The difference lies in how you ride: on a quad you sit astride your own machine, while in a buggy you sit side by side in a framed vehicle. Here is how to choose.

Quad biking: hands-on and independent

A quad (ATV) is ridden like a motorbike with four wheels. You steer with handlebars, lean your body into turns and feel every bump of the terrain. Each rider usually controls their own machine, which makes quads ideal for people who want to drive themselves and feel close to the sand.

Buggy: shared, stable and sociable

A dune buggy has a steering wheel, seats and a protective frame. You sit next to your passenger, so the experience is shared: one person drives while the other enjoys the scenery, films the ride or simply holds on and laughs. Buggies feel stable on soft sand and are a favourite with couples and friends.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Riding position — quad: astride, like a motorbike; buggy: seated, like a car
  • Steering — quad: handlebars and body movement; buggy: steering wheel
  • Company — quad: usually your own machine; buggy: a shared vehicle
  • Feel — quad: more physical and direct; buggy: more stable and relaxed
  • Photos — quad: stop to take them; buggy: the passenger can film on the move

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose a quad if you want to drive yourself and feel the terrain
  • Choose a buggy if you want to share the adventure with a partner or friend
  • Choose a buggy if one person in your pair prefers not to drive
  • Mixed group? Some can take quads while others share buggies

Practical details

The guided quad ride lasts about one hour and starts from €25 per person. Duration, price and driving requirements for the buggy tour are confirmed when you enquire. In both cases a local guide leads the group, and you pay on arrival — no advance payment.

Whichever you choose, wear closed shoes, sunglasses and a scarf against the sand. Our quad biking guide has more tips for first-time riders.
