Sandboarding is the simplest and most affordable way to enjoy the Timlalin Dunes. You do not need any experience: boards are provided on site, your guide shows you the basics and the soft sand makes every fall painless. These tips will help you get the most out of your first session.

Sitting or standing?

There are two ways to ride. Sitting on the board like a sled is the easiest way to start, and the favourite of younger children and cautious beginners. Standing, like a snowboarder, is more challenging and more rewarding — most first-timers manage a few metres on their first attempt and improve quickly after that.

How to stand on a sandboard

  • Stand sideways on the board with your feet roughly shoulder-width apart
  • Bend your knees and keep your weight centred and slightly forward
  • Look down the slope where you want to go, not at your feet
  • Hold your arms out a little for balance
  • Lean gently on your toes or heels to change direction

How to stop — and how to fall

On your first runs the easiest way to stop is to let the slope flatten out at the bottom. As you gain confidence, you can slow down by turning the board across the slope. If you lose balance, sit back onto the sand rather than putting your hands out in front of you. Sand is forgiving, and a fall usually ends in laughter.

The climb is part of the experience

There are no lifts on the dunes. Every run means walking back up the soft sand, which is surprisingly good exercise. Take your time, zigzag rather than climbing straight up, and enjoy the views over the Atlantic from the crest — they are one of the best parts of sandboarding at Timlalin.

What to wear

  • Comfortable clothes you do not mind getting sandy — sand finds its way into every pocket
  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun and wind-blown sand
  • Sunscreen and a hat for the breaks between runs
  • Bare feet are fine on cool sand; avoid the hottest hours in summer
  • Water to drink, as climbing dunes is thirsty work

Who is sandboarding for?

Sandboarding suits almost everyone who is happy to climb a dune a few times: children, teenagers, families, groups of friends and surfers or snowboarders on a rest day. It starts from €10 per person with the board provided, and pairs well with a camel ride or sunset tea for a relaxing finish. Book your sandboarding session or read our family guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is sandboarding hard for beginners?

No. Riding sitting down is easy from the very first run, and most people can stand for short runs after a few attempts. Your guide shows you the basics.

Do I need to bring my own sandboard?

No. Sandboards are provided on site and included in the price, which starts from €10 per person.

Is sandboarding like snowboarding?

The stance is similar, so snowboarders and surfers adapt quickly. Sand is slower than snow, which makes it more forgiving for beginners.
