The Timlalin Dunes lie near the village of Tamri, about 60 km north of Agadir on Morocco's Atlantic coast. The drive is one of the most scenic in the region, following the ocean past surf villages and banana plantations before the golden dunes appear beside the road. This guide explains the route, how long it takes and the simplest ways to get there.

Where exactly are the Timlalin Dunes?

Timlalin — sometimes written Timlaline — is a coastal dune field just south of Tamri, on the N1 road that runs from Agadir towards Essaouira. The dunes rise right behind the coastline, so from their crests you look straight out over the Atlantic. It is a very different landscape from the beaches of Agadir, and it is close enough for a half-day or full-day trip.

For reference, the dunes are roughly 60 km north of Agadir, about 35 km beyond Taghazout and around 20 km south of Imsouane.

Driving from Agadir: the N1 coastal road

From central Agadir, head north through Anza and Aourir, then continue along the N1 through Tamraght and Taghazout. After Taghazout the road climbs and winds along the cliffs, with wide views over the ocean. Keep following the N1 north towards Tamri and Essaouira; the dunes appear on your left-hand side, between the road and the sea.

Without stops, the journey usually takes around 50 to 60 minutes. Traffic can be slower through Aourir and Taghazout at busy times, and the cliff section deserves an unhurried pace, so allow a little extra time if you are meeting a guide at a set hour.

  • Distance: about 60 km from Agadir
  • Driving time: around 50 to 60 minutes
  • Route: N1 north via Aourir, Tamraght and Taghazout, towards Tamri
  • Road: paved coastal road with some winding cliff sections

Coming from Agadir airport

Agadir–Al Massira airport is south-east of the city, so the trip to Timlalin is longer than from the hotel zone — plan for extra time to cross or bypass Agadir before joining the N1 northbound. Most visitors settle into their accommodation first and visit the dunes on another day.

Without a car: taxis and hotel pickup

If you are not driving, the most comfortable option is hotel pickup. Pickup from Agadir, Taghazout or Imsouane can be added to any TimlalinTrip activity as an extra — simply mention where you are staying when you send your enquiry, and we include the details in our reply.

Grand taxis also run along the coast, and many hotels can arrange a private driver for the day. If you use a taxi, agree on the price and the return journey before you set off, as transport back from the dunes is less frequent than in town.

When to set off

Mornings are bright and usually calmer, which suits energetic activities such as quad biking and sandboarding. Leaving Agadir in the early afternoon lets you combine an activity with sunset tea on the dunes before heading back. Read our guide to the best time to visit Timlalin for more detail.

Before you go

  • Fill up on fuel and cash in Agadir or Taghazout — services become sparse further north
  • Download an offline map, as mobile signal can be patchy along the cliffs
  • Bring water, sun protection and a light layer for the evening
  • Confirm your meeting time and point with your guide the day before
