Photography Tips for the Timlalin Dunes
The best light, simple composition ideas and how to keep sand out of your camera — for phones and cameras alike.

With golden dunes, the Atlantic Ocean and sculpted canyon walls all in one place, Timlalin is a dream for photographers — whether you shoot with a professional camera or a smartphone. These tips will help you bring home images that do the landscape justice.
Chase the low light
The best dune photos are taken when the sun is low. In the late afternoon and around sunset, shadows reveal every ripple and ridge, and the sand glows in warm tones. Early morning light is also beautiful and often calmer. In the middle of the day the light is harsh and flat — a better time for action shots than landscapes.

Composition ideas for dunes and ocean
- Use the curving lines of dune ridges to lead the eye through the frame
- Include a person on a crest to show the scale of the dunes
- Place the horizon low to emphasise the sky at sunset, or high to show sand textures
- Frame the ocean between dunes to show what makes Timlalin unique
- Get low to the ground to capture the ripples in the foreground
Capturing the action
For sandboarding, position yourself at the side of the run and use burst mode as the rider passes. During a quad ride, the guide stops at viewpoints that make great backdrops. On a buggy tour, the passenger can film the ride — secure your phone with a strap.

Photographing the canyon
The narrow walls of the canyon reflect light in warm tones and create strong contrasts. Expose for the bright areas to keep the colours rich, and look for details: layers of rock, curves and textures make great close-ups. Read more in our canyon guide.
Protect your gear from sand
- Avoid changing lenses on the dunes, especially when it is windy
- Keep your phone or camera in a sealed bag between shots
- Bring a blower and a microfibre cloth — never wipe sand off a lens with your shirt
- Keep a spare battery warm in your pocket for evening shoots
Respect people and wildlife
Ask before photographing guides, camel handlers or local people. Keep your distance from birds — the Tamri coast is home to the endangered northern bald ibis — and avoid flying drones near cliffs and wildlife.
