Exploring the Timlalin Canyon: A Hidden Side of the Coast
Sculpted sandstone, narrow passages and soft light — the rocky side of Timlalin that most visitors drive straight past.
Published · 2 min read

Most people come to Timlalin for the dunes, but just nearby lies a completely different landscape: a canyon of layered sandstone walls carved by water and wind. A short guided walk takes you through narrow passages and curving rock — one of the most surprising experiences on the coast north of Agadir.
A landscape of stone
Where the dunes are soft and constantly moving, the canyon is solid and ancient. The walls show bands and swirls of sandstone in shades of honey, ochre and rust, polished into curves over thousands of years. In places the passage narrows so that the sky becomes a thin ribbon overhead.

What to expect on the tour
- A guided walk of about 35 to 50 minutes
- Narrow sandy passages between tall rock walls
- Some uneven and rocky ground — nothing technical
- Plenty of stops for photos
- A local guide who adapts the pace to the group
A photographer's favourite
The canyon offers very different images from the open dunes. Light bounces between the walls, creating warm glows and deep shadows, and the textures of the rock make striking close-ups. Midday light can reach deep into the narrow sections, while softer light in the afternoon flatters the colours. See our photography tips for more ideas.

What to wear and bring
- Comfortable closed shoes with good grip
- Water
- Sun protection for the walk to and from the canyon
- A camera or phone with plenty of storage
Combine it with the dunes
The canyon tour starts from €10 per person and combines naturally with a quad ride or a buggy tour for a day that shows both faces of Timlalin: golden sand and sculpted stone. The coast around Tamri is also home to the rare northern bald ibis.
