Watching the Sunset at the Timlalin Dunes: Tea, Timing and Tips

Golden light, Moroccan mint tea and the sun sinking into the Atlantic — how to plan the perfect sunset on the dunes.

Of all the moments you can experience at Timlalin, sunset is the one visitors talk about most. As the sun drops towards the Atlantic, the dunes glow gold, then copper, and the ocean turns silver. Sharing a glass of Moroccan mint tea on a dune crest at that moment is simple, peaceful and unforgettable.

Why sunset at Timlalin is special

Because the dunes face the Atlantic, the sun sets straight into the ocean in front of you. Few places in Morocco let you watch that from the top of a sand dune. The hour before sunset is also when the sand is most beautiful, with long shadows outlining every ripple.

The Moroccan tea ritual

Mint tea is at the heart of Moroccan hospitality. Green tea is brewed with fresh mint and, traditionally, plenty of sugar, then poured from a height into small glasses to create a light foam. Offering tea is a sign of welcome, and drinking it slowly while the light changes is the perfect way to end a day in the dunes.

Getting the timing right

Sunset time varies through the year, from early evening in winter to much later in summer. Plan to arrive on the dunes at least an hour before sunset so you can settle in, enjoy the golden light and take photos. When you send an enquiry with your date, we confirm the timing for that day.

What to bring

  • A warm layer — temperatures drop quickly once the sun has set
  • A camera or phone, with a charged battery
  • Sunglasses for the last bright minutes
  • A torch or phone light for walking back after dusk

Make an evening of it

Sunset tea pairs beautifully with a camel ride in the late afternoon, or with sandboarding for those who want some action first. Afterwards, stay for a Moroccan dinner in the dunes under the stars. For couples, our romantic evening guide has more ideas.
