Timlalin Dunes from Taghazout and Imsouane: A Surf-Town Day Trip

Staying on the surf coast? The dunes are on your doorstep — here is how to fit them around your surf sessions.

Sandstone sea arch and cliffs above the Atlantic waves on the coast near Timlalin

Taghazout and Imsouane are two of Morocco's best-known surf villages, and the Timlalin Dunes sit almost exactly between them on the N1 coastal road. That makes the dunes an easy and rewarding outing on a rest day, on a flat day without waves, or simply after a morning in the water.

From Taghazout: about 35 km north

From Taghazout, follow the N1 north towards Tamri and Essaouira. The road climbs along the cliffs with superb ocean views and reaches the dunes in roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Visitors staying in Tamraght or Aourir follow the same route, adding a few minutes.

From Imsouane: about 20 km south

Imsouane is the closest base to the dunes. Drive south on the N1 towards Tamri and Agadir; the dunes appear after around 20 km. It is a short enough journey to fit an activity in before or after a session on Imsouane's famous long right-hand wave.

The perfect activities after a surf session

After a morning paddling, many surfers prefer something that does not use the same muscles. A quad bike ride or a side-by-side buggy tour lets you enjoy the dunes without the effort, while a camel ride is about as relaxing as it gets.

If you still have energy, sandboarding will feel familiar to anyone who rides waves: the stance and weight shifts are similar, but the sand is slower and much more forgiving when you fall.

Plan around the tide and the wind

Surfers usually plan their day around tides and swell, and the dunes fit neatly into the gaps. Mornings tend to have calmer conditions both in the water and on the sand, while the afternoon wind on this coast can pick up and carry fine sand. Sunglasses and a buff make a breezy afternoon on the dunes far more comfortable.

An easy rhythm is to surf in the morning, rest at lunchtime and head to Timlalin in the late afternoon for an activity followed by sunset tea as the sun drops into the ocean.
